SSHOC WP4 Workshop: Developing the SSHOC Reference Ontology (Task 4.7)

One of the aims of SSHOC T4.7 is to develop a common metalevel schema - the SSHOC Reference Ontology (SSHOCro) - which will provide a "semantic interoperability framework for the description of the SSHOC data life cycle". SSHOCro will have the function of providing a conceptual model that can be used in order to (re)describe, at a generic level, the real-world life cycle of creating, using and finding data - amongst other actions - as it actually takes place in the various domains of social sciences and humanities. The eventual use of such a conceptual model to the research community, in practical terms, would be:

  • to be applied as a standard to be used in the step of devising and implementing metadata capture schemes for tracking the data life cycle in individual projects/institutions/disciplines and
  • to be of use when encoded in a semantic data format (ef. RDF) in order to map, transform and integrate existing data across projects, institutions and disciplines into interoperable pools of information for re-use and exploitation.

In order to build a properly representative and functional reference ontology which will be of practical service to the SSHOC community, it is necessary to study the actual, empirical processes that are undertaken by social sciences and humanities scholars in the data life cycle.

To this end, we are organizing a workshop (May 21-22, Heraklion, Crete at ICS-FORTH premises) to consult with expert partners from the SSH scientific community who produce and process data directly in order to receive their input and control on the foundational questions regarding this important task.

The workshop will aim to identify representative, high level research workflows and their interaction within the data lifecycle: what tools and services are used by the different research communities at what point in the data life cycle, what data is generated and when, how is it corrected, who uses it, what standard data sources are commonly integrated, where is data sought, where is it archived and under what conditions etc. By identifying the sets of tools, services and data used by researchers on the one hand, their respective ends and order of application on the other, we will set the basic empirical foundations for building a first iteration of a conceptual model. While the tools, services and data standards adopted by different communities within SSH will differ significantly, by identifying the basic workflows that exist, we will be able to begin defining common features and relations, in order to establish the general conceptual model.
