The Industry 5.0 aims to support the transformation of manufacturing sites into more digital and environmentally friendly solutions and industrial processes. This new technology supports the long-term strategy for the European industrial future that aims to have better data quality, close connection of scientific and research infrastructures and cooperation with industrial players that can contribute to an efficient economic and societal framework.

The OntoCommons project plays a relevant role in this context as it addresses the need of strengthen the interoperability of industrial solutions through the establishment of common semantic basis in different domains (e.g. materials and manufacturing) that supports the improvements of digital interactions, collaborations, co-innovation, re-use and valorisation of data.

In order to enrich the collaboration in this area, the OntoCommons consortium is organising its first Global Workshop with external experts and initiatives. The event offers a platform for all stakeholders to interact and exchange information and updates, and contributions to the content of the OntoCommons Roadmap (policy recommendations towards data sharing in the European Single Market).

The workshop combines open, topic-based discussions in organised groups with custom-designed engagement of stakeholders through low-level prototyping of novel use cases and emerging scenarios.

All the participants can get the opportunity to join plenary talks, impulse talks, moderated sessions and learn more about the main objectives of the project, the latest studies in the ontology and industrial fields, while interacting with the project members and experts in the area.

WORKSHOP SESSIONS

2 NOVEMBER 2021

Industry Commons Translator

The session will hear from stakeholders involved and interested in defining the profile and role of an Industry Commons Translator and the potential steps involved in a Translation task performed by such a role in order to learn from other sectors as well as materials and manufacturing industry in determining the requirements and role of the Industry Commons Translator. Preliminary, the Industry Commons Translator is an “ontologist” translator and coach with expertise spanning across the ICT, analytical philosophy and science/engineering domains, able to bridge gaps in the stakeholder value chain and ensure that end users can reap the benefits of ontology-based data documentation.

Ontology Interoperability

This session is dedicated to discuss on the vertical organization of ontologies by top, mid, and domain level. Stratification of ontologies not only help in modular development and reuse but also provide semantic interoperability among domain level ontologies based on generalization, unification, and abstraction of concepts. In spite of several ontologies serving and top-level and mid-level ontology, clear definition and characterization of top and mid-level ontologies still does not exist. Therefore, understanding different stratification strategies adopted in different ontology development projects is of paramount importance for OntoCommons members. This session will invite speakers from Industrial Ontology Foundry, European Material Modelling Ontology development, and DOLCE-based development (CNR) projects. Along with these impulse talks, this session will also include a panel discussion on this topic.

Enabling intra-ontology Interoperability through shared terminology

How can OntoCommons build on existing solutions for ontology standardisation in a Global setting, to enable intra-ontologies interoperability? The objective of this session is that of collecting input from our stakeholders, that will support the contents of the Standardisation Impact Report delivered at the end of the project, and eventually feed into the OntoCommons.eu Roadmap.

Ontologies Stratification

This session is dedicated to discuss on the vertical organization of ontologies by top, mid, and domain level. Stratification of ontologies not only help in modular development and reuse but also provide semantic interoperability among domain level ontologies based on generalization, unification, and abstraction of concepts. In spite of several ontologies serving and top-level and mid-level ontology, clear definition and characterization of top and mid-level ontologies still does not exist. Therefore, understanding different stratification strategies adopted in different ontology development projects is of paramount importance for OntoCommons members. This session will invite speakers from Industrial Ontology Foundry, Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO), and DOLCE-based development (CNR) projects. Along with these impulse talks, this session will also include a panel discussion on this topic.

3 NOVEMBER 2021

Establishing a Knowledge Exchange Space

The main objective of this session is two-fold:

1) to raise awareness of OntoCommons partners about projects related to FAIR implementation, EOSC infrastructure and data management good practices (Research Data Alliance) and

2) to build the basis for further cooperation between OntoCommons. Our goal in OntoCommons is to leverage existing work in these areas and exchange knowledge by bringing together OntoCommons, Industry, FAIR initiatives and the EOSC landscape.

In this session, we will introduce the three identified collaboration areas within the OntoCommons project and continue discussions on specific topics for collaboration i.e. FAIR principles, cross domain semantic interoperability and services and infrastructure.

User Experience on Ontology Engineering Tools

A number of tools exist for the various steps of ontology engineering, some very popular, others more obscure. Those tools are often designed to be used by ontology engineers and remain difficult to engage with for domain experts. In this session, we want to look at how important the experience of using such tool is, and how it impacts on the process of creating an ontology that fulfil the purpose of the end user.

Ontology-based digital marketplaces for Industry Commons

The main objective of the session is to know about the previous experience and gaps in the ontology/taxonomy based standardized data documentation in marketplace.

  • Learn about the experience from  VIMMP and Marketplace, Weldgalaxy and Market 4.0 projects regarding ontology-based marketplaces
  • Discuss the application of the OntoCommons approach to supporting interoperability
  • Propose a practical way to have alignment and interoperability of data among different marketplaces
Ontology Adoption

This session will look into the critical, yet often overlooked step of adoption in the ontology engineering and application methodology. We anticipate discussions and debates around approaches and ways to ensure the created ontologies are usable and supported by the intended users and developers in an industry context.

4 NOVEMBER 2021

Domain ontology for manufacturing and supply chain

This session will discuss on the latest development and future roadmap of the ontology engineering in material science. The session will be composed of three impulse speakers, covering areas of FAIRness in material science ontologies, domain requirements in material science, core capabilities and exploitation aspects, followed by an panel discussion, which will also be open to audience for questions related to the speeches.

FAIR Technology Adoption in Demonstrators

This session aims to discuss FAIR principles and particularly their adoption at the demonstrators level.

OntoCommons Demonstrators

The purpose of Session 2 is to address the developments of new and existing demonstrators, their impact on OntoCommons, and their use of OntoCommons. Also progress on KPIs and on specific KPIs apart of TRLs.

Industrial Engineering

The purpose of Session 2 is to discuss about both methodological and practical aspects relative to the use of ontologies in industrial engineering. The session will be composed of three impulse speakers, covering areas of ontology requirement analysis, migration of legacy data, and applications in industry, followed by an panel discussion, which will also be open to audience for questions related to the speeches.

5 NOVEMBER 2021

The session will be composed of three impulse speakers, covering areas of FAIRness in material science ontologies, domain requirements in material science, core capabilities and exploitation aspects, followed by an panel discussion, which will also be open to audience for questions related to the speeches.

Use Cases for Innovative Ontology Applications

The OntoCommons Innovation Session aims to reinstate the use of ontologies in commercial industry scenarios and incentivise their adoption in various domains where this approach can add value.

The session will explore novel and potentially innovative use cases by engaging representatives from a wider community spanning diverse domains: from global furniture distribution, to electric vehicles, skills and HR management, and accessibility instruments.
